Description

The UCCS Theatre and Dance Program within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences seeks a skilled technical director (TD) to oversee technical design and facilities for the program. The program serves an undergraduate population of 50-70 majors as well as minors and a general undergraduate population of approximately 11,000. As a liberal arts program, UCCS Theatre/Dance has an ethos dedicated to a balanced pedagogy of practical and academic teaching. The TD will work with a dedicated faculty of scholar/practitioners, all with professional practices that inform their teaching. The Theatre Dance Program is housed in the newly built 90,000 square foot, Ent Center for the Arts, which contains four theaters, a recording studio, and art gallery, all with state-of-the-art technology. In particular, the TD will manage the Osborne Theatre, the Landis Family Dance studio, the Acting Studio, and the adjacent scene shop and tech classroom. The TD will collaborate with the production team from Theatreworks, the Equity theatre also housed at Ent, who share the scene shop. Further, this position designs and builds the main stage production in the spring in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theatre and coordinates all designs and builds in the UCCS Theatre Company Season. In addition to design, administrative, and maintenance responsibilities, the TD will be expected to act as a mentor to technical theatre students and, depending on specific skills, may have the opportunity to occasionally teach. We seek someone with a passion for theater and dance, a colleague who identifies needs, solves problems, and brings the practice of our program to life.

Job Duties:

UCCS Theatre Company Technical Director:

  • Scheduling time for tradesmen (lighting, sound, carpentry, etc.) to work in the space

  • Acting as an advisor for student designers and technicians

  • Building (or supervising students building) all scenery

  • Rigging (or monitoring students rigging) as needed

  • Monitoring and managing budgets related to each production/performance

  • Creating and maintaining production schedules for each production/performance Attending technical rehearsals

  • Attending production meetings

  • The TD will act as the Scenic Designer and Technical Director of the annual Student Show

  • The TD will act as Scenic, Lighting or Sound Designer (and TD) for at least one faculty directed show in the UCCSTC season

Management/Oversight/ Administrative:

  • Overseeing and advising the stage managers selected for individual shows

  • Maintaining Theatre and Dance technical equipment, paint closet, and other storage areas

  • Assisting students with procurement of materials

  • Assisting with the oversight of practicum students fulfilling their credits on Osborne Studio productions

  • Assisting the Director of the Theatre Program with budgeting as it pertains to the Osborne Theatre Season

  • Schedule, track, and maintain a calendar of classroom/theatre usage during non-class hours

  • Coordination of the design and technical elements of the main stage student theatre production, in collaboration with the THEATREWORKS partners

  • Advising student designers in the Osborne Theatre

  • The TD will help (in conjunction with the Facilities and Maintenance Department) with the maintenance and upkeep of the department facilities

  • Monthly financial meetings with the Theatre Program Director

  • The TD will on a regular basis meet with the UCCS Presents technical staff and other UCCS theatre technicians

Job Competencies:

  • Understanding of stage management protocols and ability to communicate these protocols to students

  • Ability to manage and maintain theatre facility and equipment

  • Strong skills in scenic construction and painting

  • Knowledge of and ability to program lighting and sound boards (or willingness to undergo training to attain these skills)

  • Knowledge of the university financial protocols (or willingness to undergo training to attain these skills)

  • Ability, skills and experience in teaching technical theatre classes and basic acting courses

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

What We Offer:

Salary Range: Generally starting at $44,145 – $58,860

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A. in Theatre or comparable stage management and technical experience

    • The bachelor’s degree may be offset with five years of progressive practical experience in technical theatre and stage management

  • The multiple skills, management and technical demands of this position allow that not all candidates will have all of the skills required. However, it is expected that the candidate will be able to adapt to and learn not only new technical skills but also emerging techniques within the theater environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated training and experience in stage management protocols

  • Demonstrated commitment to and ability to work within a collaborative, multi-cultural university environment

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required move. Employee may occasionally be required to have long periods of sitting, moderate bending, moderate energy requirements and fine motor skills. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
