Full Job Description

Role Description | Music & Production Director
(Last updated: April 19, 2022)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. — Colossians 3:16

Overview
Gathered worship plays an important role in the life of a disciple. Therefore, the music & production director is a vital part of the team at Sound City Bible Church because of the impact that these ministries have in the lives of the people of our church family.

Qualifications

  • Mature disciple | Must meet the character requirements of a deacon found in 1 Timothy 3.
  • Musician | Must be both naturally gifted and trained in music.
  • Technologically knowledgeable | Must have a solid understanding of audio, video, and lighting systems, as well as other technologies that the church uses. Must be able to learn additional technologies as needed for the role.
  • Leader | Must be able to cast vision and lead teams of volunteers.
  • Developer | Must be able to train and develop leaders in music and production. This quality must be highly emphasized, as the music director should not simply be a “doer” who accomplishes tasks, but a developer who works with members in the church to use their gifts.
  • Relational Leader | Must be able to work well with a team and collaborate with others.

Beyond these qualifications, an ideal candidate…

…would be able to play multiple instruments, especially drums and keys.
…would have experience with Logic or Pro Tools.
…has a degree, professional training, or extensive professional experience.
…is less “lead singer of the band” and more “producer who brings the best out of people.”
…has varied musical tastes, and does not only listen to modern worship music.

Reports To

Administrative pastor, but will also closely collaborate with the preaching pastor for the crafting of weekly liturgy.

Music Responsibilities

  • Gathered Worship | Ensure that the people of Sound City are led in singing on Sundays in a way that proclaims the gospel of Jesus and invites them to know him better through a gospel-centered liturgy.
  • Song list | Develop and maintain the “Sound City hymnal,” adding and removing songs periodically.
  • Oversee volunteer teams | Ensure that each worship gathering has the appropriate number of musicians and production volunteers.
  • Develop band & production leaders | Prioritize meeting regularly with key leaders in both the music and production departments for development and care.
  • Fill in gaps as needed | When certain volunteers are unavailable, ensure that other volunteers are recruited. Only if that is not possible, fill the role directly.
  • Ministry support | While this role is highly focused on the Sunday worship gathering, other ministries should also receive support for music and production. Examples might include student nights, kids ministry, prayer events, or women’s discipleship events.
  • Culture | Develop the artistic culture of the church through new songs and collaboration.

Production Responsibilities

  • Production prep | Help coordinate the preparation of production elements such as slides, lights, Planning Center service order, etc.
  • Technology and Video | Be proficient in necessary technologies as the ‘go to’ person for all matters related to various software platforms, audio, video, and streaming services.
  • Equipment maintenance | Help coordinate the repair, replacement, and planning of production equipment as needed.

Expectations

  • Love | Let all that you do be done in love, both for Jesus and for his people.
  • Unity | Support and live out the mission, values, and doctrinal distinctives of Sound City.
  • Presence | Much of ministry is simply being present in the lives of those you lead. Be available, accessible, and dependable. Be present at church gatherings and functions.
  • Excellence | With humility, be thorough and strive for excellence. Don’t settle for “good enough” but look for opportunities to improve things.
  • Evangelism | Don’t only think through the lens of the church-goer, but constantly ask the question“how can we reach those who don’t yet know Jesus?”
