Director of Engineering (DOE)

Family Stations, Inc. (dba Family Radio) is a nonprofit, Christian ministry centered around our mission:

“Everything we do at Family Radio is to enable people to discover, read, trust, and profess the Word of God, the Bible.”

Are you a seasoned broadcast engineer with was a passion for radio, people, and Engineering? Family Radio is looking for a technology leader for our national radio network.

The role will be responsible for overseeing engineering operations, satellite systems engineering, and making technical and engineering purchase decisions. This role will provide strategic planning and technical direction and support for a team of engineers, technicians, and network operators at multiple Family Radio locations, and in the field. The working DOE will analyze all aspects of current engineering operations and will create a strategic plan for future development.

The ideal candidate will be willing to relocate within the first year to Franklin, TN, working daily at the Franklin-area office. Travel expected to be 50% in the first year, dropping to 25-35% thereafter.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Radio Broadcast Engineering

  • Technical support for Franklin, TN (Nashville) operation center
  • Technical review of contracts related to engineering and technical operations
  • Analysis and Centralization of Family Stations, Inc. technical operations
  • Family Stations engineering cost / benefit analysis
  • Collaboration with IT Director on IT policies related to broadcast and streaming

Satellite Systems Engineering

  • Satellite systems standards and practice
  • Satellite store forward systems engineering and workflow implementation
  • Satellite uplink systems planning and construction

Engineering Operations Standards and Policies

  • Radio station facility engineering standards
  • Radio station engineering maintenance workflow policy
  • Radio station engineering FCC compliance

Technical and Engineering Purchase Decisions and Recommendations:

  • Specification of and negotiation of equipment purchases
  • Maintenance of vendor relationships
  • Vetting and evaluating engineering contractors
  • Logistics planning for projects
  • Make capital purchase recommendations after technical due diligence
  • Technical review & financial recommendations for tower and signal lessee agreements
  • Technical review and financial negotiation of tower and signal lessor agreement

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in broadcast engineering
  • Leadership skills applied when managing outcomes
  • Holding the team accountable for success goals
  • Ability to teach skills to improve team dynamics
  • Senior level SBE Certification preferred
  • Operational and Engineering documentation best practices
  • Bringing order to chaos and developing and implementing plans for success
  • Assessing and planning to address most pressing issues in engineering refresh efforts
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with broadcast workflow (production, traffic, playout, transmission)
  • Working knowledge of FCC rules and regulations
  • Hands-on experience with AM / FM transmitters
  • Working knowledge of directional AM arrays preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of radio broadcast equipment and how to repair or replace when necessary
  • Understanding of signal management for both sales and acquisitions
  • Working knowledge of signal evaluation software (V-Soft, CommStudy) preferred
  • Awareness and experience with hands-on market signal evaluation tools preferred
  • Experience with lease negotiation
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience leading people and teams with a focus on skills development and career growth
  • Project management expertise and ability to prioritize competing projects successfully
  • Initiative to consistently improve engineering operations and proactively resolve problems
  • Maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; be a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Family Radio; and faithfully uphold and embrace Family Radio’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.
