The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Department of Music has a distinguished history of educating musicians and teachers since the 1940’s. The department currently enrolls 300 majors and minors, and employs a distinguished faculty of 24 full and part-time instructors with extensive credentials from many of the nation’s most highly regarded schools of music. The student and faculty performing groups, which are widely recognized for their artistic excellence, serve as laboratories for the development of professional skills and a full schedule of recitals, concerts, clinics, and other special events is offered each year to serve students, the community, and the surrounding region.

UWSP offers the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, Performance, Music Literature, and the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. The Master of Music degree is offered in Music Education with an emphasis in elementary/secondary education, Suzuki talent education, studio pedagogy emphasis, and various concentrations, including Jazz Pedagogy and Conducting. By providing the academic programs of a great university within the atmosphere of a small community, students are afforded an experience of excellence in a personal environment.

The Noel Fine Arts Center is the nucleus of musical activity for undergraduate and graduate music students. Newly constructed in 2005, it provides state-of-the-art multi-media classrooms, large and small ensemble rehearsal halls, teaching studios, over 30 practice rooms, a Yamaha Clavinova piano lab, the 350-seat Michelsen Recital Hall, and the Computer Music Center which houses 18 computer workstations and 12 portable practice stations. In addition to the music department, the Noel Fine Arts Center houses the Department of Theater, Dance, Art and Design, and the Aber Suzuki Center which is home to the American Suzuki Institute.

JOB DETAILS:

Position Summary

The Director of Bands at UW–Stevens Point administers the Wind Band program, conducts the roughly 40-piece Wind Ensemble and 55-piece Concert Band, and teaches conducting and secondary instrumental methods. Opportunities to teach graduate courses in conducting, literature, or other areas of interest are also available. Other duties include recruiting and supervising student teachers.

The band program at UW–Stevens Point has a strong tradition of musical excellence. The area is well supported in the department and visible in the state and region. Alumni teach and perform throughout Wisconsin, and are in prominent K-12 schools across the state.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate Required, ABD considered
  • Minimum of 3 years K-12 teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Documented successful teaching and conducting experience at the college level

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time, tenure-track, academic year based faculty position. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
