SUMMARY:
Texas Public Radio (TPR) is a mission-driven, award-winning, multimedia organization serving an audience of hundreds of thousands through seven radio stations across a wide swath of Texas. TPR produces and delivers top-quality content via radio broadcast, video and audio streaming, digital networks and live events, and works collaboratively with other media organizations to produce and provide even richer content and programming.

We are seeking an experienced Broadcast Field Engineer to participate in the installation, maintenance and repair of our growing transmitter sites in order to maintain superior service in all coverage areas, while complying with FCC technical requirements. This is a field intensive position with transmitter sites throughout South-Central Texas.

The broadcast engineer also will assist with technical support and maintenance of our studio systems in use within the organization and assist with the oversight of building operations at our headquarters facility. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, resourceful, self-starter, with strong time management and critical thinking skills.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate outbound and inbound transmissions, STL, TSL, typically via IP and RF.
Coordinate Satellite Downlinks at transmitter sites.
Maintain Transmitters and associated equipment.
Quickly and effectively troubleshoot problems with transmissions.
Log all transmission maintenance and issues.
Work with transmission workflows and best practices.
Intake, document, and escalate incidents as needed.
Quickly and effectively troubleshoot problems with transmissions.
Support events and broadcasts with technical knowledge and guidance.
Document processes.
Maintain field inventory.
Monitor broadcasts for quality and issues when necessary 24/7 on call for emergencies.
Update wiring, labeling and documentation to current plan.
Protect the station’s broadcasting licenses and prevent institutional liability by ensuring compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations.
Participate appropriately in station fundraising, sponsorship activities and live events.
Fulfill administrative obligations related to required documentation, keeping appropriate files and submitting timely expense reports.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Self-motivated, with a “willing spirit” and the ability to work efficiently with limited direct supervision. Demonstrated professionalism and personal relationship skills, including the ability to work well with other team members. Exceptional organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to work after hours as needed, sometimes on short notice and be on-call 24/7 for emergencies or scheduled maintenance. Must have a valid standard Class C driver’s license, transportation and the ability to travel on short notice.


EDUCATION:
Associate degree in electronics technology or related field, or equivalent experience in operations or maintenance at a broadcast station. SBE Certification preferred.


EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of three years technical experience working at a broadcast station with hands on experience in maintaining High Power RF transmitters.


ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS:

Familiarity with digital audio storage systems, automation systems and traffic systems. Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, telecommunication laws related to broadcast station operation and compliance. IT skills including workstation and server troubleshooting and repair, local area networking and desktop support.


PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Finger Dexterity: Using fingers to make small movements such as typing or picking up small objects or hand tools.
Talking: Verbally conveying information, instructions, and ideas clearly and quickly.
Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations, in person or by phone.
Repetitive Motions: Frequently and regularly using the wrists, hands and fingers.
Visual: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect printed materials. Must be able to differentiate color coding of wiring and components.
Physical: Ability to travel. Must have the ability to lift 75 lbs., climb ladders and use common power tools.
